Pep Guardiola will have to take charge of Man City if they are relegated.
A one-year contract has been signed between Pep Guardiola and Man City, binding both parties until the end of the 2025/26 season. However, Man City’s future remains uncertain as the club is being taken to court for allegedly breaching 115 articles of the Premier League’s financial regulations.
If found guilty, Man City could face relegation to the Championship. That would be unfortunate for “The Citizens”, as it would lead to the departure of many stars from the club. But would Pep continue to accompany them if Man City were relegated to the First Division?
The Guardian (UK) reported that in the contract between the two parties, there is no clause allowing Pep to leave the club if Man City is relegated to the Championship. If he wants to leave in that case, Pep will have to compensate the club or, in a softer option, negotiate to find a solution that satisfies both parties.
Pep Guardiola himself has also confirmed that he is not worried about this situation, because if Man City is relegated, he is still ready to accompany. “I absolutely will not consider the future, whether Man City is in the Premier League, Championship or League One. Even the possibility of me staying to lead the club if the club is relegated to League One is still higher than me leading the club to participate in the Champions League,” he said.
As for Man City, they are not worried either, because this team has recently started the process of extending the contract with Erling Haaland. The Norwegian superstar striker still has a contract with Man City until 2027, but from now on, the reigning Premier League champions have started negotiations to keep him until 2029.
The new deal comes with additional bonuses, including bonuses for goals scored and individual trophies won, and is seen as the final piece of work for sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who is due to leave next summer.
